When it comes to loved ones with dementia, it can be hard to think about what to buy them. Picking a gift that stimulates their senses whilst promoting comfort and bringing them joy can show that you are caring and understanding of their changing abilities.

You may also want to consider what stage of dementia your loved one is at as there are stages where certain gifts are suited to that stage.

Below are some gifts that will be perfect for people with dementia and can offer a stimulating and comforting experience and will be easy to engage in.

A digital clock: A digital clock is a great gift for those in early stages of dementia. This can be great as it can aid them in overcoming practical challenges and any difficulties they have with memory. With the large clock face it makes it so it is easy to read which can help give a person with dementia a sense of comfort when they are feeling confused.

A memory box: This is a perfect gift for your loved one with dementia. You can make this full of cherished memories, shared experiences and photographs of loved ones. This may trigger them to reminisce about these memories. This would also be a perfect gift some someone with dementia who lives in a care home due to it making it feel more homely with them being able to see memories as well as their loved possessions.

Jigsaw puzzles: This is a great gift for loved ones with dementia. Puzzles such as 35-piece puzzles can be good for those with early stages dementia. 13-piece puzzles can work for those in mid stages of dementia. The specialised larger puzzles can aid those that may struggle with tactile skills.

Fidget widget tools: These are excellent option for those with later stages of dementia. The Alzheimer’s Society has created fidget widgets that offer different motions such as spinning, sliding, turning, twisting and rolling. These can be a great way for stimulation which can help them focus and engage them. They can have calming effects and can be used as a distraction.

These gifts can be purchased on the Alzheimer’s Society website (https://shop.alzheimers.org.uk/).
